Hemsedal in the Hallingdal is called the Scandinavian Alps, and with reason: much of the terrain lies above the tree line and the vertical exceeds eight hundred metres, which is a lot for Norway. The skiing spreads over three summits - Totten, Tinden and Roni - with a six-kilometre run dropping from Totten into the village. The season starts in early November, earlier than almost anywhere in Europe, and lasts into May. Oslo is three hours away, and the resort fills noticeably at weekends.

What visitors say about the resort
Hemsedal is valued for Norway's most serious terrain: steep descents, couloirs and off-piste skiing found nowhere else in the country. Visitors praise the vertical drop and the fact that the resort stays open until May.
The main complaints concern the weather: wind regularly closes the upper lifts, while cold combined with wind feels harsh. Prices are another issue. Visitors also complain about the limited weekday evening life.
