Kvitfjell - the "white mountain" - was built for the 1994 Lillehammer Olympics specifically for the downhill, with the course designed by Bernhard Russi. It has stayed on the World Cup calendar ever since and counts among the fastest in Europe. Everything else here is the opposite: more than half the runs are blue, and the area lives off Norwegian families. The base lies just 185 m above sea level, yet the climate and snowmaking hold the season from November to late April.

What visitors say about the resort
Short queues and grooming carry the praise: a minute is the longest you will wait for a lift, sometimes with barely another skier in sight, while the snowcat crews score close to perfect marks. The Olympic downhill remains the headline attraction. Three differently facing flanks give options as the weather turns, and tree runs save the day in flat light. Families single out the strong children's area.
Pricing draws the criticism: by national standards Kvitfjell's value for money rates among the worst. Stronger skiers find the area small, with few interesting runs and blacks that close occasionally. The chairlifts are called old and cold, none has wind protection and guests ask for bubbles at the very least. The resort is spread along the hillside and moving between its parts without skis is awkward. Apres-ski is the weak spot: one visitor called the place deadly quiet.
