Gaustablikk lies at the foot of the 1,883 m Gaustatoppen, the highest mountain in southern Norway, from whose summit a sixth of the country is visible on a clear day. Inside the mountain runs the Gaustabanen: a funicular in a rock tunnel, built by the military in the 1950s for a radar station and now carrying visitors. Below stands Rjukan, the town of the heavy water plant and a World Heritage site; in winter the sun never reaches it past the valley walls, so in 2013 mirrors were mounted on the slope to throw light onto the square. The skiing is mostly easy, with some runs floodlit.

What visitors say about the resort
The praise is for the views of Gaustatoppen and the quiet: lift queues are almost unknown. The strongest card is the off-piste from the summit, running from red lines to genuinely extreme, and the Gaustabanen funicular carries you and your skis to the top in about fifteen minutes. Cross-country trails run for miles. Children are well served, with a heated cabin, free lifts under seven, and a pass price one visitor compared favourably with Bulgaria.
The lifts draw criticism: of thirteen, only two are chairs and the rest are T-bars. Runs are shorter and tamer than in the Alps. Snowmaking capacity falls short, and after storms the slopes took too long to prepare. Some reviews are indignant about bare patches of earth and rocks on the piste left without any fencing or warning. Apres-ski is thin, drinks and entertainment expensive, and shoulder-season menus are called narrow.
