The area beneath the Latemar massif links Obereggen, Pampeago and Predazzo, straddling the boundary between South Tyrol and Trentino. Its strength is grooming: the local ski centre wins awards for piste quality year after year, and you notice it on the first run. Snowmaking covers a hundred per cent and the season holds into late April. Several evenings a week, from seven to ten, the floodlit run at Obereggen operates along with its gondola and toboggan track.

The praise is for grooming above all: skiresort.info testers put this area first for piste preparation, and the base altitude keeps snow all but guaranteed. Beginners are steered towards the Pampeago side, where wide, gentle slopes are served by chairlifts rather than drag lifts. Reviewers single out the traditional mountain huts and their cooking, and round-ups have called Latemar a best-kept secret of the Dolomites.

What draws criticism is staying power: the area is worth a day rather than a week. Above the Tresca station the snow turns bumpy and slushy by midday, and the Predazzo runs read to several reviewers as if they had not been groomed at all. Weekends bring congestion and a confusing layout. The sharpest complaint is logistical - when a lift on the Predazzo side stops and your car is parked at Obereggen, there is no easy way back across the ski area.
