Les Contamines-Montjoie lies in a dead-end valley at the very foot of Mont Blanc, with a nature reserve - one of the oldest in France - beginning just above the village. The skiing spreads either side of the Col du Joly: Les Contamines on one flank, Hauteluce on the other, already in the Beaufortain. The valley is narrow and north-facing, and holds snow longer than the sunny slopes of neighbouring Megève. The Evasion Mont-Blanc pass ties the area to Megève, Saint-Gervais and Combloux - over four hundred kilometres of piste together.

The praise is for the snow: the favourable aspect holds cover better than at the neighbouring Mont Blanc resorts, powder survives for days after a fall, and there is plenty of off-piste between the trails. Reviewers note the wide, near-empty slopes, the careful grooming, the cheap lift pass and a village that has stayed genuinely Savoyard.

Size draws the criticism: a group of confident skiers covers the area in a couple of days and starts repeating itself. The second complaint is more serious: the first gondola out of the village is a bottleneck, and the morning ride up to Signal can take anywhere from thirty minutes to an hour.
