Meran 2000 sits on a high plateau above the town of Merano, with the cable car climbing up from below in about seven minutes. The contrast is sharp: Merano itself has a mild Mediterranean climate, palms grow along its promenade and the almond trees bloom in February - while people are still skiing above. The runs are wide and open, nearly two thirds of them intermediate, with full snowmaking. Besides the skiing there is the Alpin Bob mountain coaster and a natural toboggan run.

The praise is for the ride up from the valley: a large cable car lifts you onto the plateau in minutes, queues are practically absent, and the system is described as one of the most modern in the Alps. Guests like the immaculately prepared yet empty pistes, huts with decent food at fair prices, the big sledging area and alpine coaster, the Luckis Kinderland kids' zone and views out to the Ortler and the Dolomites.
Older lifts at Mittager and Kesselberg draw criticism, as does the size: by the fourth or fifth day of skiing the area feels cramped. Prices strike people as steep for a self-styled family mountain, with around seventy euros going on the cableways alone. There is no resort village at the slopes, so evenings mean heading down to Merano, which costs the place its ski-village atmosphere. Complete beginners can find it demanding, and the top viewing area gets busy.
