Iso-Syöte stands at Pudasjärvi and counts as the southernmost true fell in Finland: there are no more treeless summits of this kind further south. Oulu is about two hours away. The vertical is small, under two hundred metres, but there are ten lifts and terrain at every level. A local attraction is the hotel's stilted cabins among the spruces, built for watching the sunset and the northern lights.

The snow and the park carry the praise: this is the snowiest corner of Finland, and the snowpark, over two kilometres long, is called the country's most versatile. Iso-Syote has taken the World Ski Awards title for best Finnish resort four times. Beginners are pointed to the SnowWorld zone with wide green runs, better skiers to the freeride sector on run fifteen. The pistes are floodlit, and queues barely form even in the school holidays, helped by a new six-seat chair that reaches the top in under three minutes.
Scale and fragmentation are the drawbacks. The vertical is small and the runs are short, so a confident skier exhausts the place in a couple of days. The skiing is split between Iso-Syote and Pikku-Syote, and the ski bus between them runs only at weekends and peak holidays, which is awkward without a car. Most lifts are drags, and specialist ratings rate it below average.
