Rifflsee - a compact ski resort in Tyrol (Tirol) / Tiroler Oberland (region) (Austria).

Worth knowing

The ski area rises from 1,640 to 2,800 m, with a vertical drop of 1,160 m. This vertical drop lets you ski from top to bottom without changing lifts and noticeably changes the conditions during the descent. The upper pistes are at high altitude, so the snow lasts longer than on the lower neighbouring slopes.

What visitors say about the resort

Altitude and snow earn the praise: the high elevation keeps the surface in good shape long after the last snowfall, and combined with the neighbouring glacier the vertical becomes dramatic. Reviews talk about striking terrain and views, and about untracked lines still available several days after a storm, unlike crowded Solden nearby. Strong skiers value the three black runs, while beginners have a gentle slope at Mandarfen down in the valley.

The narrow offering is the main criticism: the area is small, blue runs are few, and once past the nursery slope a beginner has little to move on to. Logistics are the other issue - a single underground funicular serves the neighbouring glacier, and its capacity falls short at weekends, on holidays and during school breaks, so a morning queue builds. The same happens in reverse, since the only way back down is that train.
