Pitztaler Glacier - a mid-sized ski resort in the Tyrol region (Austria). A significant proportion of challenging runs makes it appealing to confident skiers and freeriders.
Worth knowing
The ski area rises from 1,740 to 3,440 m, with a vertical drop of 1,700 m. This vertical drop allows you to ski from top to bottom without changing lifts and noticeably changes the conditions during the descent. The upper pistes are at high altitude, so the snow lasts longer than on the neighbouring lower slopes. The season usually runs from 26 September to 2 May.

What visitors say about the resort
The praise is for the snow: at this altitude it falls naturally without cannons, quality holds well into spring, and the base builds up several metres deep by midwinter. Visitors report almost no queues and slopes that stay in shape all day. The two comfortable gondolas and the long red descents of over three kilometres get good marks, along with the sunshine, careful grooming and the view from the top station.
Price draws the sharpest criticism: reviewers repeatedly call the Pitztal pass including Rifflsee too steep for what the area delivers. The valley funicular is described as very crowded. Weather is the real weakness - when it blows, only two T-bars stay open along with one long, tiring run, wind can last for days and snow gets stripped off the top. Black runs are lacking, the terrain turns monotonous for good skiers, and the restaurant food is called dry and bland for the money.
