St. Moritz is generally credited with inventing winter tourism: in 1864 the hotelier Johannes Badrutt bet his English summer guests that the place was sunnier in winter than London - and won. It is the only Swiss resort to have hosted the Winter Olympics twice, in 1928 and 1948. Corviglia is the town's home mountain, with lifts running from the centre of St. Moritz and from Celerina up to Piz Nair at 3,057 m. The Engadine plateau is dry and sunny, which is why the local weather has long been called a champagne climate.
