Steibis sits on the Imberg above Oberstaufen and is noticeably more serious than neighbouring Hündle: over a third of its kilometres are black. An eight-seat gondola and a six-seat chair with heated seats serve the top, the rest are drags. Snowmaking is nearly complete. A Kinderland for the youngest is laid out at the bottom, and a floodlit toboggan run works in the evenings.

The children's area wins the warmest words: reviewers say kids genuinely learn to ski here. Wide gentle runs suit novices, while a couple of pitches keep confident skiers occupied. People report practically no waiting at the lifts and carefully groomed pistes, note the recent investment in a new chairlift, and rate the snowmaking, which puts the area among the most snow-sure in Germany. Sunshine, one pass for the whole link and free parking are also appreciated.
Size and sameness draw the criticism: there is no comparing this with the big areas in Austria, France or Switzerland, and a strong skier runs out of options quickly. Many consider the day pass steep for what is on offer, and the compulsory tickets for small children in ski school are bluntly called a rip-off. In fine weather the slopes get very busy.
