The area straddles an international border: the Steinplatte on the Tyrolean side at Waidring and the Winklmoosalm on the Bavarian side at Reit im Winkl, with skiers crossing between countries without thinking about it. The Bavarian side is gentle and used for learning, the Tyrolean adds more serious runs. The valley descent from the Steinplatte to Seegatterl stretches nine kilometres. Reit im Winkl is the birthplace of Rosi Mittermaier, double Olympic champion in 1976, and her name is everywhere here.

The split layout works for everyone: Winklmoosalm suits beginners and families, while Steinplatte holds the genuinely interesting reds and blacks. Its position makes it one of the most snow-sure areas on the German side. Service scores too - friendly staff, good food, fair prices in the mountain huts and spotless washrooms come up repeatedly in reviews.

Crowding is the standard gripe: the upper Steinplatte section fills up properly on peak weekends. The gondola is considered pricey at around 49 euros for two. Mileage-hungry skiers say the terrain keeps them busy for a day or two at most. And the biggest weather caveat: the area is very exposed, so in a blizzard or high wind the skiing turns unpleasant and visibility all but vanishes.
