Tahko stands in Finnish North Savo on the shore of Lake Syväri, the southernmost of the country's larger fell resorts. The vertical is only two hundred metres, but there are fifteen lifts and the runs spread over both sides of the hill. Kuopio is about an hour away, and people come in winter for more than the skiing: a network of cross-country trails surrounds it, and snowmobile routes are laid across the frozen lake. The season holds from December to mid-April.

What visitors say about the resort
Snow and convenience are what visitors like. For reliable cover this is the best bet in eastern Finland: the season opens in December and runs to late April, snowmaking covers the slopes completely and grooming is consistently good. There are plenty of lifts and hardly any queues, and because the ride up is short, skiers rack up a surprising number of runs in a day. The terrain park with its pipes gets praise, as does slopeside lodging with saunas, and the resort operates year-round.
The terrain is the problem. With about two hundred metres of vertical the runs are short and mostly easy, and an advanced rider has frankly nothing to work with: off-piste is minimal and the trees are too sparse to ride. On peak days the small area fills up quickly. Most of the lifts are drags, with a single chairlift, and accommodation draws remarks for dated fittings and bedding.
