Vuokatti stands at Sotkamo in Finnish Kainuu, and most of its slopes are floodlit - without that there would be no winter skiing here. The hill is low, around 160 metres of vertical, with full snowmaking. Vuokatti is known above all as a training base: it has a ski tunnel where cross-country skiing goes on year-round, July included, and a sports institute attached, drawing national teams from around the world. There is a park and a halfpipe on the slopes.

What visitors say about the resort
Reliable snow and the sheer breadth of activity earn the compliments. The cover holds all season, the pistes are groomed carefully, and for central Finland the choice counts as generous, clearly a step up from the southern hills. Much of the praise goes to everything beside the downhill: a snowpark with kickers and rails, a children's area, a huge cross-country network, ski jumps and an indoor tunnel for year-round training. The two four-seater chairs are singled out for comfort.
Scale and lift types are the usual gripes. The vertical is modest and the longest run barely over a kilometre, so a descent ends before you build up speed, and stronger skiers find it dull next to Lapland. Most lifts are T-bars and platters, and at the busiest times lines do form. For an area this size, some guests reckon the day pass is priced on the high side.
