Paljakka stands at Puolanka in Finnish Kainuu and is known not for its size but for its snow: the fell lies in the path of moist winds, and by midwinter its summit spruces turn into solid white figures, called tykky in Finnish. The area is small, six lifts and under nine kilometres of runs, but the grades divide evenly and there is difficult terrain. Alongside it lies the strict Paljakka reserve, with its old-growth taiga.

What visitors say about the resort
Snow and space earn the praise. Paljakka sits in the snowiest part of Finland: cover lasts five to six months and conditions stay decent even without snowmaking, with little ice reported. The profile and the grooming of the runs get particular credit, with the reds Turjanrinne and Ukonmaki and the black Jyrkanparras named as the best. Lift capacity is generous relative to the number of beds, so queues barely exist even in high season - only the school holiday week and Easter bring waiting. The bar at the top of the slopes and its friendly staff are liked too.
Remoteness and lodging draw the complaints. Kajaani is sixty kilometres away and public transport barely reaches it. Some of the cabins are run down, service is called basic, and prices are still felt to be too high. In December and January not all the terrain is open, and the choice of accommodation right by the slopes is thin.
