Ukkohalla stands on the northwestern flanks of the Tuomivaara fell by Lake Syväjärvi in Finnish Kainuu. The vertical is tiny, around 135 metres, with five lifts. The area is known above all for its terrain parks - there are several at different levels, and that is what sets it apart from its neighbours. The cross-country trails around it are prepared for both classic and skating.

What visitors say about the resort
The praise is for calm and space: riders report stepping onto the lift almost immediately, without waiting, and find the runs kept in good shape. Intermediates and families rate the mix of slopes well, and the parks get a separate mention - a junior line, the main park and a tree-riding zone, all with room left for your own ideas. The sauna complex is a highlight, as are the husky rides, reindeer farm and northern-lights outings nearby.
Criticism centres on lift queues at peak times: accounts differ, but during school holidays the waits are described as long. Accommodation has to be booked well ahead or there is simply nothing left in holiday weeks. Some reviewers complain about service and cleanliness, and the vertical is modest, so runs are over quickly. Getting there is a haul: the resort sits well away from the larger towns, and the drive from Oulu is longer than visitors expect.
