Ukko-Koli lies in Koli National Park in eastern Finland, its slopes looking out over Pielinen, the country's fifth largest lake. That view became a national symbol long ago: Järnefelt and Gallen-Kallela painted it, and Sibelius came here to work, with a grand piano hauled to the summit for him. The area is small, four lifts, but the grades divide almost evenly and a third of the kilometres are difficult.

What visitors say about the resort
The views and the vertical get the credit: these are the highest slopes in southern Finland, and the summit looks out over Lake Pielinen. The hotel stands by the top station, so you step out of the door onto the piste. The black run is talked about as one of the toughest in the country, while a long gentle blue and a very easy children's slope sit alongside it, plus a carpet lift for absolute beginners. The base has a cafe, rental and a service shop.
The modest scale is what draws criticism: there are few runs and few lifts, with an old two-seater chair and drag lifts doing most of the work. Reviewers find the steep pitches narrow and very short, with no room to open up, and not enough to fill a full day. Strong wind and hard frost close the lifts, which on an exposed summit above the lake happens regularly. On rating portals it sits in the lower half of the table.
