Tandådalen and Hundfjället are two of the six hills of the Sälen district in Swedish Dalarna, joined by a lift. The vertical is tiny at three hundred metres and the runs are short, while the lifts number close to fifty - a typically Scandinavian layout built for a flow of families. In compensation, snow settles in mid-November and lasts into May, and there is more beginner terrain and more children's zones than anywhere else in Sweden. From Sälen, on the hill next door, the Vasaloppet sets off each March - the oldest and largest cross-country race in the world.

Sälen is praised as Sweden's most family-friendly resort, with gentle, wide slopes, huge children's areas and fairytale characters on the pistes that attract families with preschoolers. Reliable snow from December to April is also noted.
Criticisms include the limited vertical drop and short pistes, which can become boring for confident adult skiers. The journey from Stockholm takes almost a full day. Visitors also complain about high-season prices, when all the families arrive at once.
