Castle Mountain stands in south-western Alberta against the British Columbia line, far from any town - the nearest, Lethbridge, is two hours away - and lift queues simply do not form. Around nine metres of snow falls in a winter and there are only seven lifts, so tracks last for days. The resort belongs to its skiers: a community of shareholders bought it in the 1990s and it still runs as a co-operative. Beyond the lift-served terrain there is catskiing, with the Powder Stagecoach running to the ridge next door.

What visitors say about the resort
The praise is for the snow and the emptiness: Castle gets the heaviest snowfall in Alberta, and strong skiers rate its chutes, bowls and long fall-line runs. The wind, oddly, counts as a plus too - it loads the gullies with snow and smooths the bumps between storms. Queues are essentially unknown, the atmosphere is old-school and friendly, and tickets and lodging are cheap.
The lifts draw criticism: there are only three serving the whole mountain, they are slow, and getting around eats time. On the exposed upper mountain a cold windy ride is punishing, and in a real blow the top chair shuts altogether, so the storm passes you by. Reviewers also complain about the thin choice of food and lodging on the hill and about inconsistent grooming.
