Fernie sits in the Elk Valley of south-eastern British Columbia, a former coal town whose brick main street was rebuilt after the fire of 1908. The mountain rises in five bowls set side by side, and most of the skiing in them is off the groomed runs, through trees and open faces. Up to eleven metres of snow falls here in a winter: moist Pacific fronts make it over the ranges and unload. There are only a dozen lifts, but more than two and a half thousand hectares of open terrain.

What visitors say about the resort
The praise is for the snow and the five big alpine bowls: Fernie is among the snowiest resorts in the Canadian Rockies, and queues are almost unknown. Reviewers note the tree and powder skiing, the unpretentious local atmosphere and the town itself, with its old buildings, museum and swimming pool. Tickets and lodging are considered reasonable by Canadian standards.
The lifts draw complaints: many are old and slow, and the layout is disjointed, so getting around eats time. The second issue is that the bowls close for avalanche control, and expert terrain can stay shut for days after a storm. Reviewers also mention that thaws bring rain this far and spoil the snow.
