Chamrousse stands on the Belledonne ridge half an hour from Grenoble - close enough that the whole city is visible from the pistes, spread out in the Isère valley. The alpine events of the 1968 Grenoble Olympics were held here: Jean-Claude Killy won all three of his golds on these slopes. There are two villages, Chamrousse 1650 and 1750, linked by runs and a free shuttle. The altitudes are modest, almost all the skiing is below the tree line, and a warm winter means relying on the guns.

The praise is for the access and the price: thirty kilometres from Grenoble, one of the cheapest passes in the Northern Alps, and an area large enough that an intermediate will not be bored. Nearly half the kilometres are set aside for beginners, the local ski school instructors are well rated, and thanks to the city's proximity the Sunset Park has grown into one of the best at any small Alpine resort.
Altitude draws the criticism: the top point falls short of 2,300 metres, much of the terrain lies below the tree line, and mild winters show it. The Roche Béranger side is short on facilities, with few shops and restaurants.
