The praise is for the village and for the access. Villard-Reculas has stayed a genuine mountain settlement, chalets only and no towers, with a view down over the Bourg d'Oisans valley. The detachable four-seat Villarais chairlift reaches Le Signal in under ten minutes, and that is the gateway to the 250 kilometres of the Alpe d'Huez domain. Reviewers value the empty local slopes and the cheaper family passes.
The lack of anything to do off the skis draws criticism. Facilities are minimal - one hotel, a couple of outlets, almost no activities, and one review complains that there is no ski rental in the village. Restaurants are faulted for serving food cold. The village sits low enough that base snow is described as anything from excellent to mediocre. The whole link to the big domain rests on the single Villarais chairlift, whose replacement by a gondola has been going through planning.
