Alpe d'Huez rises to the Pic Blanc at 3,330 m, and almost all the skiing sits above two thousand metres - above the tree line, on the open flanks of the Grandes Rousses. From the top starts La Sarenne, sixteen kilometres down to Auris, one of the longest runs in the Alps. Beside it is Le Tunnel, which begins in a passage cut through the rock and counts among the hardest pistes in France. The area links Vaujany, Oz-en-Oisans, Villard-Reculas and Auris, and each of those villages can be reached on skis.

Alpe d'Huez is praised for its sunshine - the resort is known as the "Island of the Sun" for good reason - and for Sarenne, a 2,000 m descent stretching 16 km, mentioned in almost every review. Visitors also highlight its size, with more than 250 km of pistes, and its good snowpark.
Criticism focuses on queues for the lift to Pic Blanc, the spread-out layout of the resort and the price of food on the slopes. Reviewers also regularly note that the south-facing slopes that provide the sunshine turn the lower runs into slush by midday in spring.
