Kicking Horse opened in 2000 above the town of Golden on the Columbia River - the only new resort in the Canadian Rockies in a quarter of a century. There are just five lifts but over 1,200 metres of vertical, and a profile unusual even for Canada: three fifths of the terrain is black or double-black, mostly open bowls and rocky chutes. At the summit stands Eagle's Eye, the highest restaurant in Canada, with a glass wall onto the valley. Heliskiing operates alongside the resort - Golden is one of the centres of the business in British Columbia.

What visitors say about the resort
The praise is for the vertical and the snow: 1,315 metres, among the biggest in North America, with an average seasonal fall approaching seven and a half metres. The resort has a solid reputation for being hard: the double-black chutes and bowls are serious, and there are no queues at all. A quiet carpet area at the base serves first-timers.
The lifts draw criticism: there are only five, the infrastructure trails neighbouring Revelstoke, and parts of the mountain open only for limited hours. Intermediate terrain is thin: a family needing a week of varied skiing is usually pointed to Lake Louise instead.
