Revelstoke opened in 2007 and immediately set a record: 1,713 metres of lift-served vertical, the greatest in North America. Mount Mackenzie stands between the Monashee and Selkirk ranges where moist air masses converge, and ten to twelve metres of snow falls here in a winter. There are only seven lifts for fifteen hundred hectares, so most of the skiing is in trees and bowls off the groomed runs. Both heliskiing and catskiing operate from the resort - Revelstoke is the historic capital of the business in Canada.

What visitors say about the resort
The praise is for terrain and snow. This is the biggest vertical drop on the continent, and reviews agree the tree skiing is world class: nine to fourteen metres of snow a season, long varied descents and powder that survives a while. Freeriders note that serious off-piste starts right off the lifts rather than after a long traverse.
Lifts, prices and the changing town are what people complain about. There are effectively three lifts: the gondola from the base and two chairs above it. On peak days the gondola line stretches across the hotel plaza and out to the car parks, and skiers describe waiting from 8:55 until eleven in the morning just to start. Tickets are expensive, which hurts families, and beginners find the pitch simply too steep. The base area lags: the resort sits near the bottom of reader rankings for lodging and dining.
