What visitors say about the resort
What still earns compliments is the place and its past. Monesi is nicknamed the little Ligurian Switzerland, a pocket of snow in the Ligurian Alps above the Riviera. In its heyday it drew whole families, ran five lifts, and its floodlit piste was reckoned the first of its kind in Italy. The surviving infrastructure is still described as a foundation for year-round mountain activity.
The criticism concerns what became of it: the resort is listed as closed. A landslide and flooding in 2016 severed the access road, the detour grew by some thirty-five kilometres, and the lifts stopped. The road was restored only in the summer of 2020, but the Tre Pini chairlift, built by the Province of Imperia on private land, never resumed: the agreement with the landowner lapsed while the village was cut off. The province found no operator, and almost every lift and nearly all the hotels have shut.
