Montecampione stands on a slope above the Valle Camonica about an hour from Lake Iseo, and it is a rare case of a resort built from nothing in the 1970s: there are no villages as such, only three residential tiers at different heights - Alpiaz, Prato Secondino and Plan di Montecampione. The slopes face south and west, the forest reaches almost to the top, and the skiing is mostly intermediate.

The area is not currently running in full. The lifts passed through a bankruptcy auction at the Brescia court to the company Plan 1800; about four of eleven are turning, and three worn-out chairlifts - Beccherie, Secondino and Splaza - are being replaced under a project of roughly 17.5 million euros, with the area due to reopen in stages starting from the 1,800 m level. The resort has no website of its own at present.

What visitors say about the resort

The praise is for value: the day pass is cheap, children lessons affordable and the nursery slopes gentle and convenient. Adults like that the forest here is sparse, so off-piste lines work despite the modest altitude. The most interesting descents are reckoned to be those under the Monte Corniolo chairlift - Fodestal, the direttissima and run sixteen. Proximity to Brescia and Milan counts in its favour too.

Snow quality and the patchy operation draw criticism. Wide swings between day and night temperatures on the lower slopes spoil the surface. After the previous operator ran into trouble the area opens only in part: the key Corniolo chairlift has stood idle for years awaiting an expensive overhaul, and skiing is reduced to the Plan 1800 sector with its two chairlifts plus one lift at the 1200 level, mostly on weekends. Without Corniolo, reaching the upper slopes means driving up.
