Obersaxen and the Val Lumnezia lie on opposite sides of a ridge in the Surselva, joined by a circuit over several summits; the longest run, from Piz Sezner down to Vella, goes on for fifteen kilometres. This is Carlo Janka's home ground - the 2010 Olympic downhill champion - and the area's second piste carries his name. The villages on the sunny side are Walser and German-speaking, while Romansh is spoken down in the Lumnezia. It stays quiet even in the holidays: the resort lives off locals and Swiss families.

What visitors say about the resort
The praise is for the quiet and the snow: the area is not small, yet queues are practically unknown, and the north-facing slopes hold cover longer than the altitude suggests. Intermediates have the most room, with a wide and varied piste network and a panorama reaching to the Valais and the Austrian Alps. It is a sunny, family place.
Old equipment draws the criticism: there are many drag lifts, and some connecting runs climb uphill, leaving snowboarders to walk. Strong skiers find too little that is difficult, snowmaking is modest for an area this size, and the mountain restaurants are called characterless and expensive. Recent reviews also complain of underinvestment.
