Rudnik stands by Tršće in Croatian Gorski Kotar, not far from the Slovenian border. The area is tiny: one lift and a little over a kilometre of runs with 190 metres of vertical. The altitude approaches a thousand metres and these wooded hills get snow enough, but there is no snowmaking, so the place works only in snowy winters. Its visitors are mostly locals from Čabar and around.

The slope itself earns the compliments: by Croatian standards it is a rarity, a properly steep, wide and well groomed piste. The forest cross-country loops, the children's lift and the local club's beginners' school are appreciated too. The Brvnara lodge beside the piste is praised for home cooking and prices well below other Croatian resorts, and parents like having the toilets and the rental counter right there.
What visitors hold against the place is its unreliability. The snow is entirely natural: the snow cannon sat unused for years, so skiing depends completely on the weather. The single platter lift is called the bottleneck of the hill, with a rope tow added only to take training groups off it. Both piste and lift are steep enough to trouble novices. In lean years people arrived to find ungroomed runs and shuttered buildings, so checking before setting off is wise.
