Čelimbaša stands by Mrkopalj in Croatian Gorski Kotar, a place reckoned the cradle of Croatian skiing: the country's first ski club was founded here in the early twentieth century. Today the area is very small, a single lift and under three kilometres of runs, but the altitude approaches a thousand metres and these hills get plenty of snow. There is no snowmaking, and the season depends entirely on the winter.

The praise is for a genuinely working ski hill in Gorski Kotar, with runs spanning a gentle tourist piste to a short black one; locals rate it the most promising in the region. Visitors mention the quality of the grooming, the warm restaurant beside the lift serving hot food, a separate children's lift, and the atmosphere of a village that calls itself the cradle of Croatian skiing. Those whose Alpine trips fell through are especially grateful.
Dependence on the weather is the main complaint: there are no snow guns, so everything rides on natural snowfall and the season turns out short and unpredictable. The platter lift attracts the most grumbling - it broke down mid-operation, stranding people halfway, and children under twelve are not allowed on it, so families have left without skiing. On snowy weekends half of Croatia turns up and the car park fills early.
