Trail information
Karpacz lies at an elevation of 480 to 885 m in south-western Poland, near the border with the Czech Republic, where Śnieżka (1602 m) is located. This Lower Silesian town is a popular winter sports resort and is regarded as the most important tourist centre in the Polish part of the Giant Mountains (Krkonoše). Karpacz is significant for many reasons, one of which is that it is considered the home of the famous mountain spirit, Rübezahl.
Karpacz is especially charming when covered in snow, creating an idyllic, unique landscape that attracts both winter walkers and skiers. Karpacz's rich tourism history, particularly during and after the National Socialist movement, can be seen and heard at the resort's Museum of Sport and Tourism, housed in a charming historic wooden building. Another architectural attraction is the wooden Wang Church in the Brückenberg resort district. The church has several pointed gables and is built from Norwegian pine, apart from its stone church spire.
The Giant Mountains (Krkonoše) lie directly on the border between Poland and the Czech Republic, and their name derives from their striking visual presence in the landscape. Although only one-third of the mountains belongs to Poland, this part of the massif is home to its highest and most popular peak, Śnieżka. Typical landscape features include rocky ridges and beautiful mountain lakes. For centuries, the Giant Mountains (Krkonoše) have been a tourist magnet for travellers from around the world. Today, much of the massif has been declared a national park. The winter sports centres in the Giant Mountains (Krkonoše) offer everything needed for a good ski holiday: well-groomed pistes, modern lifts and seemingly endless cross-country trails across large, high plateaus.
