Straja lies on the flanks of the Vâlcan range above the mining town of Lupeni, in Romania's Jiu valley. The runs drop through cuttings in conifer forest, the longest of them over eight kilometres, with up to seven hundred metres of vertical. Almost all the skiing is intermediate. The hillside is densely built up with guesthouses and chalets climbing alongside the lifts. Prices remain among the lowest in Europe, with a day pass at around thirty euros.

What visitors say about the resort
Altitude is the headline praise: this is the highest skiing in Romania, and reviewers say the snow holds steadily right through the season. They note the modern gondola and chairlifts, a spread of runs for every level, and several slopes lit for evening skiing. Beginners are pointed towards the local instructors and a convenient nursery piste. Queues are short by any comparison: at peak hours a few minutes rather than the half-hour lines of the Alps.
Parking is the first thing criticised: traffic is partly closed off in winter, so luggage has to be carried on foot from the lot to the guesthouses. Prices are the second recurring gripe, with a share of reviews arguing that food, lift passes and parking cost more than the resort's standard warrants. There are also complaints about upkeep, with slope preparation described as uneven.
