Bakuriani lies on the northern flank of the Trialeti range and was a major winter centre back in Soviet times, when national teams trained here. The skiing now spreads across three sectors: Didveli up top, where the runs are harder, and the interconnected Kokhta and Mitarbi. In 2023 Bakuriani hosted the Freestyle and Snowboard World Championships, for which the area was substantially rebuilt. You get here from Borjomi on the narrow-gauge line locals call the "cuckoo": it was laid in the early twentieth century, and one of its bridges was built to a design by Eiffel's company.
