Gudauri sits on the Georgian Military Road by the Jvari pass, two hours from Tbilisi, and is the largest and highest resort in Georgia. No forest grows here: all the skiing is on the open flanks of the Greater Caucasus, with the top lift finishing below the 3,307 m Sadzele. There is next to no snowmaking and little need for it - the natural falls are heavy, which is why Gudauri has long been known for freeriding, ski touring and heliskiing. Prices are far below Alpine ones: a day pass costs roughly a quarter of an Austrian one.

What visitors say about the resort
Reviews describe Gudauri as offering the best value for skiing in the region: the lift pass is several times cheaper than in Europe, the pistes are wide and open, and freeride and heli-skiing are available directly from the lifts. Visitors praise the reliable snow and long season, which lasts until April.
The main concerns are serious: the Georgian Military Highway closes in winter because of avalanches, and it can sometimes be impossible to reach or leave the resort for days. There is also avalanche danger off-piste and a weak rescue service. Visitors also complain about wind that stops the upper lifts and chaotic development.
