Bukovel was built from nothing in 2000 beside the village of Polyanytsya in the Ivano-Frankivsk region, and in twenty years it became Ukraine's largest resort and one of the biggest in Eastern Europe. The Carpathians here are low and wholly wooded: under five hundred metres of vertical, runs cut through beech and spruce, summits rounded and free of rock. Snow is unreliable at this latitude and altitude, so every single piste is covered by snowmaking. The resort does not live on skiing alone - there is a lake, a thermal complex and a large stock of hotels.

What visitors say about the resort
The praise is for preparation and prices: this is the only Ukrainian resort with snowmaking on every piste, which stretches the season from late November to late April. The runs are floodlit and patrolled, mostly red in grading, and both novices and confident skiers report being satisfied. Passes are cheap, and food and drink cost less than in Western Europe at comparable quality. From Monday to Friday the slopes are all but empty.
Queues and access are what draw criticism. At weekends reviewers describe about twenty minutes to buy a pass, up to twenty-five in the rental shop and a similar wait to board a lift, stretching to forty minutes at the busiest times. The roads in are called badly broken, with average speeds around thirty kilometres an hour, and on arrival visitors meet heavy traffic and overflowing parking. The ski sectors are not joined up especially well.
