Ski resorts in North America
North America offers a different style of skiing from Europe: resorts are usually spread far apart, villages are built around the lifts rather than the other way around, and much of the terrain consists of marked gladed areas and open bowls rather than narrow groomed pistes. Snow in the Rocky Mountains and on the British Columbia plateau is dry and light because of the distance from the ocean.
The continent's largest ski area is Whistler Blackcomb in Canada, a legacy of the 2010 Olympics. In the United States, highlights include Big Sky in Montana, with one of the largest vertical drops in the country, and Breckenridge in Colorado, where the upper lifts reach nearly 4,000 metres. Quebec is home to smaller resorts such as Le Mont Grand-Fonds.
